| 2025-02-17 | 8:00 AM | 0.32 | 2.0 | 0.15 | 3.5 | NA | | Collected rain gauge sample at 2:30 PM yesterday when the overnight and morning rain event changed to snow squalls. Rain in gauge was 0.17”. At that time, I replaced the gauge with a dry gauge to collect snow. The snow SWE was 0.15”. Total of rain and snow SWE is 0.32”. Did a core SWE of 2” snow to get 0.15”, which agreed with the gauge SWE. The 2” snow report is an average since there is a lot of drifting. Very high winds started at 2:30 PM yesterday when a cold front arrived and will continue all day today. Temps quickly fell yesterday from the high of 38° to 22° at 6:30 PM. Temp at gauge reading time at 8 AM today was 18°. |
| 2025-02-16 | 7:00 AM | 1.02 | 0.8 | 0.16 | 2.5 | 1.43 | | Collected 0.80” of snow with SWE of 0.16” at 2:20 PM on Feb. 15 when the snow changed over to freezing rain due to temp of 32°. The 24-hour total of snow and rain in gauge was 1.02” SWE. Temp at 7 AM collection time was 33°. Used a hand pick to dig out a wet and icy 2.50” snowpack depth core sample. The snowpack is basically sleet frozen together with slushy snow on top, since we got snow on Feb. 15 before changing to rain. The icy “snowpack” SWE is 1.43” !!! The “snowpack” is composed of mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from MULTIPLE events. Lots of ice on my long driveway in addition to places where I walk to put out many bird feeders. |
| 2025-02-15 | 8:00 AM | 0.04 | 0.3 | 0.04 | 3.0 | NA | | Snow from gauge and 0.3” core sample of light fluffy snow BOTH agreed at 0.04” for SWE ! Snowing light to medium at collection time. Heavy, VERY dense 3.0” ICY “snowpack” is composed of a little previous snow, but mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from multiple events. |
| 2025-02-14 | 7:00 AM | 0.20 | 1.0 | 0.06 | 3.0 | NA | | Morning high on Feb. 13 was 37° with temps falling all day. Morning rain on Feb. 13 changed to a little sleet and then snow. Brought gauge in at 12:30 PM on Feb. 13 when the temp had dropped to 31°. Then measured rain and a little sleet and snow that was in the gauge to get SWE of 0.14”. It snowed lightly to medium for most of the daylight hours. It continued to snow after dark. The snow that collected in my spare gauge from 12:30 PM had SWE of 0.02”. I don’t feel that is accurate because of high winds yesterday causing a lot of the snow to not be collected in the gauge. There was drifting last night due to high winds. The new snow varied between ½” and 1 ½”. I averaged that by doing a 1” core sample with SWE of .06. Temp at 7 AM today was 15°. The most accurate SWE number is from adding the melted gauge catch from earlier in the day of 0.14” and core of 0.06” for a final SWE of 0.20” . Heavy, VERY dense 3.0” “snowpack” is composed of a little previous snow, but mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from multiple events. There is a VERY hard .3" ice crust on top. |
| 2025-02-13 | 7:30 AM | 0.44 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 2.0 | NA | | Temp was 34° at 7:30 AM gauge collection. Gauge catch has a mix of sleet and rain from last night. Sleet started yesterday evening. Heavy, VERY dense 2.0” “snowpack” is composed of a little previous snow, but mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from multiple events. Snowpack depth has decreased due to temps above freezing last night causing partial melting and rain. There is a VERY hard .3" ice crust on top. |
| 2025-02-12 | 7:00 AM | 0.03 | 0.7 | 0.03 | 3.0 | NA | | I took a core sample from the snowboard at 4:30 PM on Feb. 11 of 0.70” of new snow that just fell to get 0.03” SWE. This is after the snow had stopped. This is more accurate than the snow that was in the gauge, which has SWE of 0.01”. Heavy dense 3.0” snowpack is composed of a little snow, but mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from multiple events. There is a VERY hard .3" crust on top of the newest one inch of sleet. The crust is composed of sleet and freezing rain from a few days ago. |
| 2025-02-11 | 7:00 AM | T | T | T | 2.5 | NA | | Light snow flurries all morning yesterday. Heavy dense 2.5” snowpack is composed of a little snow, but mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from multiple events. There is a VERY hard .3" crust on top of the newest one inch of sleet. The crust is composed of sleet and freezing rain from two days ago. |
| 2025-02-10 | 7:00 AM | T | T | T | 2.5 | NA | | Snow flurries all morning yesterday. Heavy dense 2.5” snowpack is composed of a little snow, but mostly sleet, rain and freezing rain from multiple events. There is a VERY hard .3" crust on top of the newest one inch of sleet. The crust is composed of sleet and freezing rain from the previous day. |
| 2025-02-09 | 7:00 AM | 0.61 | 1.0 | 0.62 | 2.5 | NA | | Snowfall core sample is a mix of a little snow, mostly sleet and freezing rain. The core SWE and gauge catch were almost identical! There is a crust on top of the sleet of .3" that is composed of sleet and freezing rain. I can mostly walk on top of the crust, with my foot breaking through sometimes. My Outback broke through the crust but struggled a little with lots of sleet, even in X mode. |
| 2025-02-08 | 7:00 AM | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 1.5 | NA | | Snowpack depth includes sleet and freezing rain crust, making it heavy and dense. |
| 2025-02-07 | 7:00 AM | T | T | T | 1.5 | 0.36 | | The snowpack SWE was calculated taking into account that there is still previous snowpack in many areas. The areas that were bare before Feb. 6 now have some snow, sleet and freezing rain all over, but tall grass in the fields is showing through there. The snowpack where I took the core sample measured 1.50" with SWE of 0.60". I multiplied the snowpack core sample X .6 to get an average SWE of 0.36". It was difficult to break through the thick ice crust due to temp being 27 degrees. |
| 2025-02-06 | 8:00 AM | 0.50 | 1.0 | 0.40 | 1.5 | 0.36 | | 1.0" of "snowfall" SWE is a combination of freezing rain, snow and sleet that was taken as a core sample and melted to get SWE of .40 on Feb. 7. Ice accretion was about 0.10”. The snowpack SWE was calculated taking into account that BEFORE the precipitation from last night, there was BARE ground in many areas. The ground that was bare now has a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. The snowpack where I took the core sample measured 1.50" with SWE of 0.60". I multiplied the snowpack core sample X .6 to get an AVERAGE SWE of 0.36". Snowpack (with sleet, rain and freezing rain mixed in) depths varied since part of the ground was bare on Feb. 5. Precipitation ended at 8 A.M. on Feb. 6, since I was outside putting out many bird feeders to see it end. I have spent about two hours over two days trying to figure this out accurately. I give up now. So frustrating. Maybe I should just melt the gauge catch and not do any core samples when there is mixed precipitation and when part of the ground is bare and part has snowpack. I see that many others do it that way. The long-range forecast does not show any complete melting for possibly weeks. Therefore, I don’t know how to do snowpack SWE with sleet, rain and freezing rain mixed with snow and not being consistent in coverage area. Or maybe I should just ignore the 40% snowpack from before Feb. 6 and just measure new snowpack that falls on the previously bare ground… |

I still have solid ice on about half of my .3 mile long driveway. I used the guidelines of 60% of the ground having 2". Then 2" X .6 = 1.2". Rounded to 1". SWE of 2" was .84". Then 60% of that is .5". |
