Yesterday was a mostly rain event, with several periods when the rain was mixed with sleet. By afternoon snow was mixing in, before ending as all snow at night. Quite an impressive swing in temperatures: 49° between the day before yesterday's high and this morning's low! |

Snowdrop tops appearing around the pond. |

Finally, there are a few patches of open ground in the SW facing part of the yard. Still approx 66% snowcovered with depths from 1" to 4" --much more in piles where it had been shoveled/plowed. Basement sump pump is on. This has been the best possible melt-off of all of the snow: slow & steady so it sinks into the ground instead of running off. Hope this is a good omen for the coming growing season! |

Not surprising, I guess, since we've had snow on the ground almost every day since 12/14/25. Now the snow has a very heavy, wet consistency that the metal ruler just glides through. It doesn't support our dog's weight anymore. Grateful for the slow, steady melt off. |

Yesterday we had the proverbial "wintery mix." Started as snow and then shifted between freezing rain, sleet, graupel, and snow. At one point around noon the snowflakes were as large as quarters. Untreated surfaces were very icy. |

Now the tops of a few of the rocks bordering the front garden can been seen. [Added after reading this morning's MOD and seeing Madison's report and noticed the first flakes of snow beginnong to fall at 8:28am. Chopped through one of the few, flat, representative areas in our yard to take a core. Difficult because of all of the layers of ice in between the 7.8" snowpack, for a SWE of 1.84" @ 28° Note: this location drains into the Wallkill River system, not the Pequonnock and Passaic river systems.] |

Still 100% snowpack; still using Yak-Trax and a ski pole to get to the gauge each morning. Found the windsock that had blown off so many times that I didn't even bother to put it back up. What a windy winter! |
| 2026-03-01 | 7:30 AM | T | T | NA | 8.0 | NA | | Snowing, 31° Min/max: 31/51° Snow is covering all untreated surfaces. Still 100% snowpack. During yesterday's late winter pruning I was surprised that walking across the side yard which had not been walked on since the snow began weeks ago, that it almost supported my weight. It had started out as very light snow. Total precip for February was 1.75" with most of it being snow. |

Snowpack is 100% and very crusty now. It takes more pressure to push the metal ruler all the way through. Still using a ski pole to get to the gauge as any melt from the above freezing temps the day before refreezes as an ice glaze on the compacted snow. As of this morning's OBS almost 5" of the original snowpack is gone. Slowly but surely.... |
| 2026-02-26 | 7:30 AM | T | T | NA | 12.0 | NA | | Mostly cloudy, 31° Min/max: 31/42° Snow stopped yesterday immediately after OBS. Nothing in the gauge this morning. Snowpack 100% with reported 12.0" the average of three samples. There was some compression in it yesterday; and paths got a little wider. It has two distinct ice layers in it. Used the side of the metal ruler to 'shave' as much of the ice as possible off the snowboard for the next round. |

Both snow and ice are very persistent this winter. My 10 year garden journal notes that we've had Snowdrops in bloom in the pond garden this time in prior years. This year you can't even see the pond or the gardens around it -just drifts of snow. |
| 2026-02-24 | 7:30 AM | 0.05 | 1.0 | 0.04 | 15.0 | NA | | Partly cloudy, 19° Min/max: 18/33° In 17+ years of winter reporting, I don't think there's ever been a more challenging snowstorm to report accurately. The extremely "holey" snowpack before even the first flake fell + the texture of the snow itself + the winds, made the depth vary wildly. Yesterday at OBS the conditions were so bad I didn't take several samples and report the average, as I usually do. So I'm revising yesterday's Snowpack Depth up from 12.0" to 14.0" after taking five samples this morning. The total SWE of the three day storm = 0.88" & snow total = 9.7". The SWE is likely the more accurate measurement.
And we got off easy compared to eastern NJ and south NJ! |

Remained light snow until evening. At 11pm swapped out the gauges, as the snow was creeping up the side of the tube toward the top. SWE from last night's melting that was 0.49" This morning's OBS SWE = 0.31" for a total of 0.80" New snowfall = 8.5" Thankfully, throughout the storm there has been very little wind; and the power held. |

Still 100% snowpack, but shoveled paths are widening. Getting the core for the SWE yesterday messed up the flat, representative area that I've been measuring snowpack on. (2.14" of SWE) Finding a new location is difficult, avoiding drifted areas, areas where the snow had been shoveled ON to, dog tracks, and fox tracks, so I'll be sending average depths in from today on. |

At OBS an ice glaze covers everything; not sure when it fell, or if it was a wintery mix. Several times yesterday radar showed snow over us when there was none. Snow began yesterday sometime before 5am; at noon the snow was creeping up to the top of the outer tube, so swapped out the tube & measured. At noon we had 5.5" with a SWE of 0.44" Sent in SWR. The snow was fluffy and falling almost straight up & down. It kept snowing and the winds picked up in the afternoon and evening, causing a lot of drifting. During the evening it was mixed with some sleet. Some tiny ice crystals inside the top of the tube, and wow! What a difference in the snowpack this morning! It is heavy and difficult to walk through; going over the tops of my high garden 'wellies.' I can't tell what part of the snowboard is the cleared half from the uncleared half, so I didn't even try to take a core for the 24hr SWE. The SWE gauge total for the 24hrs is 1.57" with a storm total of 1.68" and 24hr snowfall of 12.0" and storm total 14.9" with a lot of compression due to the sleet on top of the snow. I couldn't use my usual metal ruler marked in 1/10" and had to use the metal yardstick. Hope this storm helps our drought. |

These three weeks of January seem like we've gotten a lot of snow; its only 7.7" but it's been so cold that the snowpack has been very persistent. |

I took only one measurement of the snowpack this morning, not several to get an average depth: 6.0" It stayed in the teens all day yesterday, briefly making it to 20° for a few minutes. Despite the cold, large slabs of snow & icicles slid off the roof yesterday. This morning: a deep freeze. |
| 2026-01-20 | 8:00 AM | T | T | NA | 5.9 | NA | | Sunny, 10° Min/max: 10/29° A lot of snow was blowing out of the trees yesterday leaving a fresh dusting on some shoveled paths and part of the snowboard. I did observe one very brief, light show shower yesterday. Still more snow to fall out of the shrubs. |
| 2026-01-19 | 8:00 AM | 0.29 | 2.7 | 0.30 | 6.8 | NA | | Sunny, 18° Min/max: 17/34° Yesterday including trifecta of winter percipitation: started as sleet, mixing and then changing to snow, with even a brief graupel tosses in as well. I need an extra outer gauge or an extra 1 lb metal coffee can so I can get the core of the snowpack in addition to the core of the snowboard at each OBS. |
| 2026-01-18 | 7:10 AM | 0.34 | 4.0 | 0.37 | 4.5 | NA | | Sleeting, 29° Min/max: 26/33° Yesterday's snow started winding down around 1:30pm, and at 3pm when sun started peeking out, I measured: 4.0" Sent in a SWR. Getting dressed to go out for this morning's OBS I thought it was just overcast, but when I got outside, discovered that it was lightly sleeting; with a dusting of new snow on shoveled paths. Don't know for how long sleet has been falling. At OBS snow measured 4.0" on the snowboard, but three representative samples averaged 4.5" snow on the ground. |

Yesterday morning just after OBS @ 7:52am it began snowing. Continued snowing with some very large flakes, for approx. 15 minutes @ 37° Nothing on the ground or in the gauge this morning. Our pond that was half open water yesterday is frozen again. I guess that was our January Thaw. Back to winter... |

The one at 4:30pm was intense, with extremely heavy snowfall, and strong winds, changing direction throughout the squall. Almost blew over a 7' garden arbor. It was snowglobesque. By dark the ground was covered; but by OBS this morning just a light dusting remains on grassy surfaces only. |
