Participating in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count this morning saw another flock of American Robins and what for us is a rare bird: a Red Breasted Nuthatch. Yesterday was the first day above 40°s in what seems like forever; neighbors were outside again! |
| 2026-02-14 | 7:30 AM | T | T | NA | 11.0 | NA | | Cloudy, 27° with a band of pink sky all along the eastern horizon. Min/max: 22/36° A few snowflakes banked up against the bottom of the tube at OBS. Did not even amount to a full drop after melting. I can't believe how long the 100% snowcover is holding. Still at 11.0" |

| 2026-02-12 | 8:00 AM | T | T | NA | 11.5 | NA | | Cloudy, 26° Min/max: 26/36° Persistent snow pack, although shoveled paths and boot prints in the snow are widening slightly. Enormous slabs of snow/ice were sliding off the roof yesterday. Two brief periods of snow flurries (10am & 3pm) left no accumulation and nothing in the gauge this morning. |
| 2026-02-11 | 7:30 AM | 0.02 | NA | NA | 11.5 | NA | | Overcast, 29° Overnight low of 27° Got just over freezing yesterday. At OBS an ice glaze covers everything; not sure when it fell, or if it was a wintery mix. Several times yesterday radar showed snow over us when there was none. The gauge this morning was a mix of ice and liquid. Should have worn Yak-Trax and put a set on my dog --she slipped out and fell sideways on the icey path. |

Another flock of American Robins came throught this morning, but all of the holly berries have been eaten. A few pecked around in the snow under the holly for any berries on the ground. A lot of winter still to go... |

It was 1* with blasting winds & a tree fell across the lake entrance road, causing loss of power to 300+ families. Rough stuff. Thank goodness for our woodstove. |

Wind has blown new snow all around; part of the snowboard is blown clean. Strong gusts create brief white-out conditions. Measured snow at OBS from the hood of the car that is parked next to shrubs to protect it from a lot of the NW wind. Snow melt from the gauge (banked 2/3 way up the inside of the tube) is the only certain measurement this morning. |

There are so many darting in and out of the holly, I can't even count them. What a sight in February! |

This morning at OBS when the outer gauge was tapped on its side, it only amounted to a pea-sized pile of very flakey snow in one corner. Too little to measure. |

A lot of rabbit tracks on top of the snow, and what looks like fox tracks running around the pond. |

Birdfeeders are very active; yesterday saw an unusual bird here: a Yellow Belly Sapsucker. In two weeks: The Great Backyard Bird Count. |
| 2026-01-31 | 8:00 AM | T | T | NA | 14.0 | NA | | Overcast, 9° Min/max: 6/16" Was surprised to see a new dusting of snow; hadn't even brought my other tube out for OBS this morning. At first wasn't sure if it was frost or snow, it was so fine-grained and covered the bottom of the outer gauge as individual specks. But it poured out when I tapped it. Don't know what time it fell. 100% Snowpack @ 14.0" January totals: SWE of 2.75", and snowfall of 22.9" Perception of this being an unusually snowy winter isn't true (yet). Total snowfall this Winter so far is 36.6" and last winter was 26.0" So more. But not astronomically more. |

| 2026-01-27 | 7:30 AM | T | T | NA | 16.0 | NA | | Sunny, 9° Min/max: 9/25° Took most of yesterday to dig out from the storm. Brief snowflurries on and off leaving a fresh dusting on the snowboard; snow in the gauge melted down to two drops. Our dog doesn't even try and get to the yard; she 'goes' right outside the door where it's shoveled. |
| 2026-01-26 | 7:30 AM | 1.57 | 12.0 | NA | 17.0 | NA | | Overcast, 17° Min/max: 11/17° Challenging reporting day. Snow began yesterday sometime before 5am; at noon the snow was creeping up to the top of the outer tube, so swapped out the tube & measured. At noon we had 5.5" with a SWE of 0.44" Sent in SWR. The snow was fluffy and falling almost straight up & down. It kept snowing and the winds picked up in the afternoon and evening, causing a lot of drifting. During the evening it was mixed with some sleet. Some tiny ice crystals inside the top of the tube, and wow! What a difference in the snowpack this morning! It is heavy and difficult to walk through; going over the tops of my high garden 'wellies.' I can't tell what part of the snowboard is the cleared half from the uncleared half, so I didn't even try to take a core for the 24hr SWE. The SWE gauge total for the 24hrs is 1.57" with a storm total of 1.68" and 24hr snowfall of 12.0" and storm total 14.9" with a lot of compression due to the sleet on top of the snow. I couldn't use my usual metal ruler marked in 1/10" and had to use the metal yardstick. Hope this storm helps our drought. |

| 2026-01-22 | 8:00 AM | T | T | NA | 4.9 | NA | | Sunny, 32° with a light breeze. Min/max: 31/29° On and off last evening there were brief, light snow showers; no additional accumulation. After OBS this morning I laid the snowboard on top of the remaining 4.9" snowpack to get ready for the weekend's forecast snow. Will re-spray the brackets on the outer tube with WD-40 again. These three weeks of January seem like we've gotten a lot of snow; its only 7.7" but it's been so cold that the snowpack has been very persistent. |
| 2026-01-21 | 8:00 AM | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 6.0 | NA | | Sunny, 1° Min/max: 1/20° This morning our dog beat me back to the door; I normally have to wait for her after finishing my OBS measurements. I took only one measurement of the snowpack this morning, not several to get an average depth: 6.0" It stayed in the teens all day yesterday, briefly making it to 20° for a few minutes. Despite the cold, large slabs of snow & icicles slid off the roof yesterday. This morning: a deep freeze. |
| 2026-01-20 | 8:00 AM | T | T | NA | 5.9 | NA | | Sunny, 10° Min/max: 10/29° A lot of snow was blowing out of the trees yesterday leaving a fresh dusting on some shoveled paths and part of the snowboard. I did observe one very brief, light show shower yesterday. Still more snow to fall out of the shrubs. |
| 2026-01-19 | 8:00 AM | 0.29 | 2.7 | 0.30 | 6.8 | NA | | Sunny, 18° Min/max: 17/34° Yesterday including trifecta of winter percipitation: started as sleet, mixing and then changing to snow, with even a brief graupel tosses in as well. I need an extra outer gauge or an extra 1 lb metal coffee can so I can get the core of the snowpack in addition to the core of the snowboard at each OBS. |
| 2026-01-18 | 7:10 AM | 0.34 | 4.0 | 0.37 | 4.5 | NA | | Sleeting, 29° Min/max: 26/33° Yesterday's snow started winding down around 1:30pm, and at 3pm when sun started peeking out, I measured: 4.0" Sent in a SWR. Getting dressed to go out for this morning's OBS I thought it was just overcast, but when I got outside, discovered that it was lightly sleeting; with a dusting of new snow on shoveled paths. Don't know for how long sleet has been falling. At OBS snow measured 4.0" on the snowboard, but three representative samples averaged 4.5" snow on the ground. |

Yesterday morning just after OBS @ 7:52am it began snowing. Continued snowing with some very large flakes, for approx. 15 minutes @ 37° Nothing on the ground or in the gauge this morning. Our pond that was half open water yesterday is frozen again. I guess that was our January Thaw. Back to winter... |
