The outdoor gauge had at that point caught .07" of rain. The snow continued all afternoon but lightly. A strictly visual estimate of snowfall from indoors noted only about 1" at sundown and roughly 3" around 11:00 p.m. The .84" reported gauge catch is the .07" of rain plus the melted snow in the gauge at observation time. This information tells only a partial story. There was a "crown" of snow on top of the gauge which fell off when I moved it, and since the gauge was full, an unknown amount of snow was not captured. All this tells us is that the precipitation was something in excess of .84". My snowboard level was 10.5" over the entire board, but I suspect wind had reduced it. Multiple measurements nearby on what had by that time been bare ground ranged from 11.0" to 13", with a average of 11.5-12.0". We apparently did not get the full brunt of the storm, accumulation predictions having been much higher. Also, I did not hear, see, or from this morning's observations, detect strong winds. At observation time this morning, it was still snowing lightly with a slight breeze. Temperature hovering at freezing.
