With snow ... blowing and drifting off nearby higher surfaces such as roofs; frozen crust layer at base of snow core off the snowboard that is likely frozen rain; certainly challenges with obtaining the snow core and feel the higher liquid is due to the frozen crusty base. Sideway snow that started around 8p, big wet flakes at first.
With rain ... we pulled the gauge around 8p with the change to snow. There was 0.84 liquid at the time. The new gauge put out (we have 2 of the 4" cylinders) captured 0.31 from 8p to the 7a observation. Cylinder was crusted with snow on the north and west facing side. |

| 2025-02-19 | 7:00 AM | 0.21 | 1.7 | 0.21 | 2.9 | 0.31 | | A surprising series of observations. Off the snowboard roughly 1.7 inches was measured. Taking a core off the board yielded 0.21 liquid ... whereas the gauge catch was only 0.13 liquid. The latter makes sense with the former per SLR and snow consistency observed. However taking a core from a representative location of total snowfall yielded 0.31 liquid which goes well with the liquid measurement from yesterday. So, left feeling obligated to go with the 0.21 liquid despite the low SLR. Snow blowing off roofs was observed throughout the event and the observation site is not without impact. Perhaps a consideration of error to the overall observation. |
| 2025-02-18 | 7:00 AM | 0.10 | 1.2 | 0.10 | 1.0 | 0.10 | | The gauge catch was only 0.06 which would have yielded a 20:1 SLR which seemed a bit high. Taking a core off the snowboard which measured 1.2 which was a pretty good representative average from other nearby surfaces yielded 0.1 liquid which felt more appropriate for the gauge catch. |

Taking a core sample off the snow board yielded 0.03 liquid equivalent. The snow being light in consistency and some wind yesterday, when settling the snowboard with the 7a observation may have led to some blowing and drifting. It is perhaps that with blowing and drifting that snow filled in. Nevertheless, I noted the 0.03 on the 24-hour snowfall SWE. |
| 2025-02-12 | 7:00 AM | 0.29 | 2.8 | 0.29 | 3.0 | 0.29 | | Breakdown: Would have thought a higher SLR. The gauge catch melted down yielded 0.22" liquid. The snow board measured 2.8" snow. Took a snow core at 7a and melted it down to get 0.29. An hour or two passed with very little snow. Figuring error with the snow core, took a second snow core and got 0.30. Given consistency went with 0.29 for the liquid and 2.8" for snow as of 7a. |

| 2025-01-06 | 7:00 AM | 0.62 | 9.4 | NA | 9.0 | 1.22 | | Realizing the magnitude of blowing and drifting, went to nearby Southwest High School field, the only well-open area in the neighborhood. A total of 27 measurements later, the average was 8.8 inches. Took a core sample. Found a spot in our front yard of 8.8 inches which will serve as the snow depth location for the coming days.
During the storm, measured off a snowboard in our backyard:
2025.01.05 (7a): 2.2" (not counted in this observation)
2025.01.05 (1p): 3.0"
2025.01.05 (7p): 5.8"
2025.01.06 (7a): 0.6"
A total of 11.6" which seems erroneous. Lots of blowing and drifting off of neighborhood structures and given the small size of our backyard where the gage is located there are blowing and drifting issues there as well.
0.62" liquid - from the standing gage during the storm
1.22" liquid - from the 7a core of 8.8 inches
The day before was 0.39" liquid with 2.2" snow. If we assume the 2.2" snow had a 10:1 ratio then 0.22" liquid with respect to the 8.8" snow core that yielded 1.22" liquid yields some raised eyebrows. Could it be that perhaps compaction occurred?
If we go by the snowboard then the snow total of 11.6" to the 1.22" liquid seems a bit more reasonable owing to potential ice accretion error at the base of the core closest to the grass when taking the core.
Took a second core of 8.8" snowfall, representative of the findings in the Southwest High School field. The second core was taken in my front yard where it measured 8.8". When melted it came out to 1.25". Wow!
So, in conclusion, I am confident in the present snow depth of 9" and the liquid equivalent close to 1.20 to 1.25". As to the actual total snowfall before compaction I am a little less certain. I do lean more towards higher amounts of the present 8.8" average snow depth at the moment. If the 6-hour snowboard measurements are anything to follow then I would lean more closely towards the 11.6" for the actual total snowfall.
I will leave my measurements as such. |
