measurement of 8" snow pack depth and 2.52 in water equivalent we can calculate an additional 2.14 in water equivalent from the big 2/23 storm. Assuming the traditional standard of 10:1 ratio (for a moderately moist snow, which it was in total, we can calculate a new total snow depth of about 25 in for the 2/23/26 storm. Note that we were not able to access the site on 2/23 -travel ban and blizzard conditions. Maybe half the total snow had fallen overnight by 7 AM on 2/23, and the rest by late in day on 2/23 - so our tuesday (2/24) observation of 14.5 in of new snow depth was likely an underestimate of the actual accumulation. As we noted in our obs. notes on the 2/24 -- the extreme winds of 2/23 (locally recorded at the MYC met station -less than 2 miles south of our cocorahs site -- showed sustained wind for more two hours over 60 mph and frequent gusts over 70 mph and several over 80 mph. Drifting was the rule though the snow fairly moist. The result was that it made measuring new snow depth at our site (using a snowboard) problematic as a true representive sample. |
