| 2025-04-04 | 7:00 AM | 1.94 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | | 1.28" was measured in a bucket at midnight. Therefore 1.28" had fallen yesterday. 1.00" + 0.94" = 1.94" using rain gauge total when reading rain gauge this morning. 1.94" total using rain gauge - 1.28" using bucket to measure the 4/3/2025 total = 0.66" had fallen after midnight e.d.t. on 4/4/2025. Note the amounts of 1.28" and 0.66" were approximate because the bucket was only 10 feet from the house and the official rain gauge was not used; but the total of 1.94" was measured with the official rain gauge. A bucket was used due to lightning safety where the distance is only 10 feet from the front porch where my gauge is about 60 feet from the house. Quickly brought the bucket in to house measured radius and used measuring cup because it was unsafe to read the gauge at midnight due to lightning. The total of 1.94" is accurate because the gauge is 60 feet from the house. The 1.28" and 0.66" were approximate since it was based on the bucket method last night at midnight and the bucket was only 10 feet from the porch and probably was too close to the building. |

Snow depth on ground 1.5" in full depth spot areas and 0.5" in shallow spot areas. Due to the spotty nature of the snow, had to take 2 cores. Estimated 0.01" of S.W.E. still stuck to grass after taking each core. Full depth area - 0.14" + 0.01" stuck adjustment = 0.15". Shallow area 0.03" + 0.01" stuck adjustment. = 0.04" S.W.E. = shallow area 0.04" X 15 % and full depth area 0.15" X 85 % = 0.14" S.W.E. Note that 15 percent of the ground was bare again just before the snow started very late last evening due to sublimation and slight melt during the day time hours yesterday. The amount stuck to the grass was 0.04" minus 0.03" = 0.01" stuck correction needed since there was virtually no sublimation or melting of the snow during the night where the bare spots became shallow snow spots. Snow depth = 1.5" X 85 % + 0.5"X 15 % = 1.35". 1.5" over all depth rounded to nearest half inch.

According to the outer cylinder observations, it could have been a trace of very fine snow or just frost - hard to tell. The ground is 90 percent covered with snow and 10 percent bare spots. There is approximately 1" to 1 1/2" of snow in the snow spots with 0.12" of S.W.E. 0.11" + .01" adjustment for a little snow that was stuck to the grass = 0.12". 0.12" X 90 percent spots = 0.11" over all S.W.E. Snow depth = 1.25" X 90 percent spots = 1.1" over all depth. 1.0" rounded to nearest half inch. There was considerable sublimation and melting due to the strong sun yesterday. It started to flurry around 7:35 a.m. this morning with medium size flakes. |
| 2025-02-17 | 8:00 AM | 0.26 | 2.2 | 0.24 | 2.0 | 0.18 | | 0.02" of rain had fallen between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on 2/16/2025. See observation noted from yesterday to add the 0.02" of rain to gauge reading since 0.02" of correction was needed since the gauge was read at 7:25 a.m. yesterday. 1.6" of snow with 0.20 S.W.E. had fallen between 7:30 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. yesterday morning on 2/16/2025. 0.5" of snow with 0.035" S.W.E. had fallen yesterday afternoon and evening on 2/16/2025. A total of 2.1" of snow had fallen yesterday on 2/16/2025 with 0.235" of S.W.E. and 0.02" of rain with of rain. Also 0.1" of snow with 0.005" SWE had fallen last night. The rain had abruptly changed to snow at 7:30 a.m. yesterday morning. A core was taken this morning. Snow depth on the ground 2.0" with 0.18" of S.W.E. (0.17" core reading plus 0.01" correction for the slight about stuck to grass since I was not able to scoop up all of the snow in the core hole and a tiny bit remained stuck on the grass. Gauge had read 0.20 in house had read 0.20" after morning snow at 10:40 p.m. Gauge had read between 0.23" and 0.24" (0.235") shortly before midnight in house after melting additional afternoon and evening snow. Gauge had read 0.24" after melting night snow. Added 0.02" for correction which was subtracted yesterday - see observation note because I have read gauge at 7:25 a.m. yesterday instead of 7:00 a.m. yesterday. |
| 2025-02-16 | 7:00 AM | 2.35 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | | The rain had changed rapidly to snow around 7:30 a.m. this morning and started to accumulate slightly around 7:35 a.m. This snow will be recorded in the next observation date entry on 2/17/2025 since it happened after 7:00 a.m.. The gauge had read 0.41" after the first 1.00" emptying at midnight. This 0.41" was not emptied at midnight. This morning the inner gauge was overflowing at 7:25 a.m. It was emptied and the rest of water was poured in at 7:25 a.m. and it had read 0.37". Since it was raining lightly estimated 0.02" correction for the rain that had fallen between 7:00 a.m. and 7:25 a.m. to correct to 7:00 o'clock since I have overslept by about 20 minutes. 1.41" from 7:00 a.m. to midnight and 0.94" from midnight to 7:00 a.m. and 0.02" from 7:00 a.m. to 7:25 a.m. 1.00" first inner tube overflow overflow + second inner overflow 1.00" + 0.37" third final reading - 0.02" estimated correction to 7 o'clock = 2.36" 1.41" had fallen on 2/15/2025 and 0.95" on 2/16/2025. The 0.02" estimated between 7:00 and 7:25 will be recorded in the next entry along with any snow that had started at 7:30 a.m. Note it had very rapidly changed to snow within a few minutes of the final emptying. 0.02" for the next rainfall on my next gauge reading. At 8:20 a.m., I have brought the inner cone and funnel inside. The gauge had read approximately 0.005" between zero and 0.01 which had indicated about 0.005" of rainfall from 7:25 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. for the very short period prior to changing to snow at around 7:30 a.m. prior to melting the snow in the funnel in the house at 8:20 a.m. when the funnel and inner tube was removed from the gauge Therefore 0.02" rain plus a trace (0.005") = 0.02" of rain to be recorded on the next 7:00 a.m. 2/17/2025 observation and the rest of the water as SWE for the snow for the next 2/17/2025 observation date. There was already about 1/4" of snow accumulation around 8:20 a.m. |
| 2025-02-15 | 7:00 AM | 0.21 | T | T | T | T | | Sleety rain (liquid and solid raindrop mixture) started to fall around 12:30 a.m. and had changed to all rain at 12:45 a.m. There was no glazing on the trees, fences and 90 percent of the driveway away from the house. Since the driveway near the north facing garage door was sheltered from the sun yesterday and the temperature was -11.0 C (11.2 F yesterday) @ 6:55 a.m., this created a icing problem on the driveway near the garage door with approximately 0.01" to 0.02" of glaze of ice within 5 to 8 feet of the garage door. The ground is still covered with 20 percent snow spots and 80 percent bare. There was about 0.01" of ground glaze near and on top of these snow spots. The rest of the ground had no glaze. Did thermometer probe test and found that the ground still is very cold and frozen to a depth of 3 inches. Soil temperature 32 F at surface, 30 F @ 1" depth, 29 F @ 2" depth, 32 F 3" depth, 33 F @ 4" depth and 35 F @ 5" depth. I have notice more runoff than usual event with the moderate rain this morning. The minimum 2 meter air temperature was 0.0 C (32.0 F) @ 3:53 a.m. The 0.21" had fallen last night on 2/15/2025 from 12:30 a.m. to 7:05 a.m. There was no ice glazing on the rain gauge when it was read at 7:05 a.m. A trace of snow was for the solid clear ice pellets (sleet) mixed in with the liquid rain from 12:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Since I have noticed that there appears to be ice glaze on the bottom 5 steps of the 16 step stairway going down from the driveway to the back yard near the garage door and that the driveway was icy at the fence gate and near the garage door, I decided to walk around my house on the other side, use the other fence gate and walk down the slope to read my backyard rain gauge for safety reasons. |
| 2025-02-14 | 7:00 AM | T | T | T | T | T | | Very light snow flurries yesterday on 2/13/2025. 70 percent snow spots 0.2" thick with 0.07" S.W.E. in spot areas. 0.07 X 70 percent spots = 0.05" S.W.E. 0.2" X 70 percent spots = 0.14" over all snow depth which is a trace to the nearest half inch. Snow pack density = 0.05"/ 0.14" = approximately 35 percent. 30 percent of the ground is now bare. The extremely thin partial snowpack rounds to a trace to the nearest half inch. A little more of the snow had sublimated and melted yesterday when a brief period of partial sun came out around lunch time on the over all generally cloudy day. Bitter arctic cold this morning with a minimum of -11.0 C (12.2 F) @ 6:55 a.m.. This bitter cold is bad news for possible flash flooding tomorrow and tomorrow night as the ground will likely still be frozen a couple inches of depth when the forecasted torrential rains begin tomorrow. Note the arctic oscillation index is now extremely negative, going to be negative 5 standard deviations, which will likely mean bitter cold with possible zero to subzero air low temperatures next week with the next arctic outbreak. This also means a warm Alaska again like that January this year next week. |
| 2025-02-13 | 7:00 AM | 0.23 | 0.0 | 0.00 | T | T | | 0.13" of rain had fallen mainly yesterday afternoon and evening on 2/12/2025. 0.10" of rain had fallen last night after midnight. Approximately 80 percent of the ground is still covered with 0.3 inches of snow (measured mostly 1/4" with a few 3/8" in the spots on the average and 20 percent of the ground is bare. 0.3" X 80 percent spots = 0.24" which is very slightly less than 1/4" over all - therefore a trace A core was taken in the spots at an average depth (measured 1/4" to 5/16" thick). There was 0.09" SWE remaining in the snow spots. 0.09" * 80 percent spots = 0.072" SWE remaining overall. Density = 0.072"/0.24" = 30 percent density of the remaining snow pack. Use a trace according to COCORAH procedures since slightly less than 1/4" is remaining and will be rounded to a trace to the nearest half of an inch. The spot thickness was surprising uniform. |
| 2025-02-12 | 7:00 AM | 0.38 | 2.9 | 0.30 | 2.5 | 0.40 | | 0.2" of snow had fallen yesterday morning on 2/11/2025 with 0.02" S.W.E. The mornings snow had entirely melted before the afternoon snow. 2.6" of snow had fallen yesterday afternoon and evening on 2/11/2025 with 0.27" of S.W.E. After midnight the snow had changed to rain around midnight with brief period of a few very large snow flakes around 12:45 a.m. Estimated 0.1" (looked like 1/8"of snow in the cylinder) in the rain with 0.01" of SWE. after midnight. There was 0.09" of SWE after midnight with 0.08" of freezing rain last night captured in the outer cylinder with the estimate 0.01" SWE for the snow. Snow summary 2.8" on 2/11/2025 with 0.29" of SWE and 0.1" on 2/12/2025 with 0.01" SWE plus 0.08" of freezing rain and drizzle = 0.09" of SWE. 2.8" plus 0.1" = 2.9" of snow. 0.29" plus 0.09" = 0.38" of SWE. There was a 1/16" to 1/8" thick glaze of slushy ice on top of the snow this morning. It was all rain and drizzle after 12:50 a.m. It was raining very lightly with drizzle at 7:00 a.m. this morning. There was a little glaze with small icicles on the wires in which the snow had already fallen off most of the wires from yesterday. The depth of the snow on the ground where a core was taken this morning was 2.3" thick. The core value was 0.40". Since there was 0.38 of total SWE based on gauge catch and 0.02" SWE had melted yesterday prior to the addition snow which should have given 0.36" SWE maximum for the core. Maybe the snow had drifted slightly to cause the core value to be 0.40" or slightly higher than the expected value based on gauge catch. I will have to report my observed core value of 0.40" and made a note of it in my observation notes by stating that the core was taken inadvertently in a drift area.
Also notice that there is a significant glazing of ice on the tree branches in areas were the snow had blow off from the north east wind. |

Minimum temperature was 1.1 C (34.0 F) at 5:21 a.m. The driveway was semi-wet at 7:00 a.m. and started to dry around 8:00 a.m. The garbage can lids had large drops of water on them and were wet at 7:00 a.m.. The rooftop was moderately wet. The rain gauge had read 0.01". |

| 2025-02-06 | 7:00 AM | 0.84 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | | 0.76" of rain had fallen yesterday on 2/5/2025 before midnight and 0.08" of rain had fallen today on 2/6/2025 during the last night. The precipitation was all rain and there was no ice accumulation. Check for possible ice accumulation every hour from 5:00 p.m. to midnight using head lamps and no ice was observed on the branches, rain gauge, plants nor the bushes. The air temperature remained slightly above freezing and was at a minimum of 0.3 C (32.5 F) during the event and had remained between 0.3 C (32.5 F) and 0.6 C (33.1 F) between 7:00 p.m. and midnight when the rain was the heaviest. This will imply that there probably was some slight icing on the other side of the Ohio River in Hamilton County and downtown Cincinnati where it was slightly colder due to the slightly higher latitude. There was a flash then a crash of thunder which scared me around 11:40 p.m. It was 6.9 C (44.4 F) @ 7:00 a.m. and rising. |

No spot reduction will be made until the 10 percent bare level is approached. At the 5 percent level there is only a 0.1" correction to the snow depth which is insignificant. The 5 percent bare area is mostly under a tree or very near to a building. Cores are still showing approximately 3/4 of an inch of melt water remaining with 0.78" on the last core sample taken. The reduction of snow pack has been extremely slow this week due to the extremely cold temperatures and the process is mainly sublimation which is extremely slow with virtually no melting even in the sunny spots. There was 1 accumulating snow of 0.1" this week in which it had sublimated in less than a day. |

Took core sample at 12:30 a.m. and sit it out all night to allow to melt while I went to bed. I did this since I did not expect any more snow during the night. I was very fortunate that I have shoveled my driveway and have kept it very clear last night at various times in the evening from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Had to take 12" X 12" sample this morning from the driveway from a very clear area which was completely shoveled last night since both the outer cylinder and inner cylinder was inside. Gauge had read 0.23" from this sample taken from driveway. 0.23" X 3.14159 X 4.0^2/4/144 =0.020" 0.21" SWE + 0.02" SWE = 0.23" SWE, The core value was 1.38" from the melt which was sampled last night at 12:30 a.m. and was poured this morning. 0.95" + 0.43" = 1.38" SWE. Add extra 0.02" to SWE from measurement this morning to the core value from the snow sample taken from the yard last night @ 12:30 a.m. on 1/11/2025 and added the driveway sample driveway taken early this morning on 1/11/2025. 1.38" SWE @ 12:30 a.m. + 0.02" SWE extra from snow last night = 1.40" SWE. (Corrected core SWE value due to surprise snow after midnight last night after 12:30 a.m.) There is now currently 10.5" of snow depth on the ground at 7:00 a.m. |
