I am pretty sure there were wind gusts above 70mph yesterday, leading to the planned power outage. The wind had really subsided by the time I got up there to measure the snow, although it certainly wasn't calm overnight either. |

Another dismal monthly summary: 0.89/11.0" (69%/49%), although not in record-low territory (but ranked 11th and 8th lowest out of 36). The mean temperature of 31.2F (+8.3F) was the warmest on record, similar to December. The seasonal mean of 29.1F for Dec-Feb broke the old record by 2.5F, while the total precipitation of 2.68" was only 9th lowest, and the DJF snowfall of 38.4" was the 6th lowest. The overall snowfall since September was 44.3", another record, this one by 6.0". Considering the size of the temperature anomaly for February, there were remarkably few daily records: 51, 49, and 49F on the 5th, 6th, and 9th for Tmax, and 31F on the 8th as well as 32 on the 28th for Tmin, in addition to two tied records at 31 and 30 on the 25th and 27th. The high temperature of the month was reached on the 5th and 16th, with 51F, while the warmest Tmin was 33F (not a record) on the 24th. The coldest day was the 20th with 16/00F (the only low at or below 0F). The wettest and snowiest day was the 17th with 0.27/4.7", not a daily record. There were only 18 days with 1" of snow on the ground (a new record), with a peak of 4.5" on the 21st. End of month snow cover: Trace (record-low). I should mention that there were 9 days with wind gusts over 50mph, 4 with 60mph+, and 2 with 70mph+ (78mph on the 24th was the highest, resulting in a power outage that lasted only 6h, for once). |

January 2026 Statistics: Precipitation = 0.79" (73% of 1991-2020 normal); Snowfall = 11.9" (68%); Temperature = 23.7F (+1.1F). The wettest (snowiest) day was the 8th, with 0.20/2.9", both of which were (wimpy) daily records (the driest daily records remain 0.12/1.5" on the 20th of January, back in 2004). The warmest temperatures occurred early in the month, with 46F for Tmax on the 3rd (new daily record), while 33F for the Tmin on the 1st was not warm enough for a record. The 2nd of January was the first ever January day with measurable precipitation but no measurable snowfall (since 1991). The first four days of the month also featured only a trace of snow on the ground - unprecedented as well! 30F for Tmin on the 3rd, 12th and 13th tied/broke/tied the daily records for those dates, respectively. A cold snap in the latter half of the month broke three daily Tmax AND Tmin records in a row (23rd-25th) - on the cold end: 11/-6, 16/-4, and 10/-11F. Those were also the first three dates with subzero lows, setting a record for the latest such occurrence since 1991. End of month snow depth: 2.5" (still record-low). The seasonal snowfall total so far is only 33.3", breaking the previous record from 1994-95 by more than 2". There were only 4 days with less than 30mph wind gusts, in contrast with 10 over 50mph (highest: 69mph on the 4th). |

| 2026-01-02 | 7:00 AM | 0.02 | T | T | T | NA | | Tmax: 43; Tmin: 33 both before and after midnight, thus dodging another daily record. However, we had our first ever "rainy" day in January, as the rain-snow mix never fully converted and melted off the snowboard as it fell. Peak gust: 31mph. |
| 2026-01-01 | 7:00 AM | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | T | NA | | Tmax: 46 (yet another daily record, by 3F); Tmin: 38 (colder later today). Here are the statistics for the month of December 2025: 1.00/15.5" (90%/83% of the 1991-2020 normals). More than half of that fell on the 3rd of December (0.58/9.9", not enough for daily records). The seasonal snowfall has reached 21.4", my 2nd lowest on record for September-December. Snow depth peaked at 8" on the 4th and dropped all the way to a trace from the 22nd to the 27th (and again on the evening of the 31st). If memory serves, this is only the 2nd time on record with a just a trace of snow on the ground around Xmas (1994 was the previous depressing case like that). The real grim statistics deal with our temperatures: December ended up above freezing: 32.5F which is 10.5F above normal, by far the biggest warm anomaly of any month on record (June 1990 onwards). The previous record for the biggest warm anomaly was November 1999, with +8.0F. The previous record for December was just last year with 29.2F (3.3F colder than this year). There were eight new daily Tmax records (plus three tied records) as well as TEN new daily Tmin records (also plus three tied records), both by far the most of any month since my observations started more than 35 years ago. All of these records were on the warm side, of course. The warmest values were reached right before Christmas, with 56F for Tmax on the 23rd and 40F for Tmin on the 22nd. Both of these values are 2nd only to the early December heat wave of 2021 that holds the monthly records of 59 and 42F, respectively. After the second warmest November on record, we are definitely not on track for a "good" winter season. Here is hoping that January turns things around. Almost forgot to mention that the neighborhood wunderground station reported 48mph yesterday, a fitting end to a month with 24 such days (above 40mph), and a record-tieing total of five days with 70mph, and a record gust of 89mph on the 19th of the month. |
