Wettest and snowiest day: 0.05/0.8" on 28th. 0.05" of mostly rain (T of snow) fell on the 16th, two weeks before the latest such event on record. No daily records were broken. Snow depth at end of month: 0.5". Average temperature for the month: 36.2F (+6.9F) = 2nd highest on record (1999 was another 1F warmer). Daily records broken: 58F for Tmax on the 14th; tied: 63F on the 3rd ties both the daily and monthly record for November. For Tmin: four daily records in a row from the 11th to the 14th: 37, 39, 36 (this one only tied the record), 42F. The last record was also the second highest Tmin ever recorded in November. On the cold side, 15F for Tmax yesterday and 1F for Tmin on the 29th missed their respective daily records. the first daily Tmax at 32F or below occurred on the 26th, 15 days past the previous record-latest date in 2014. |

This was our first measurable snow of the season, right around the median first snowfall date since 2015, and about a week later than in the first two decades of record-keeping (1990-2009). The daily totals of 0.71" and 2.7" established new daily records for the 5th of October. |

(1) September 2025 was the wettest since 2013, with 2.77" (133% of normal); there were two daily precipitation records, the first one on the 16th with 0.16", and the 2nd one on the 23rd, with 1.58", which is the highest daily record since 2013 as well (for September); temperatures were unremarkable, with 52.6F for the average being 0.6F higher than the 1991-2020 normal, and not a single daily record; September 18th marked the first frost of the season, and no snow fell in September (not as common anymore as in the 1990s).
(2) Water Year 2025 ended up with 20.70", my 3rd lowest in 35 years (the driest: 16.15" in WY'02 remained out of reach); the precipitation total was 81% of my 1991-2020 normal (25.56"). A bit worrisome that WY'24 was the 5th driest with 21.12", so the sequence of the last two years ranks #2 (after WY'01&02 which were 2.5" drier than the last two years). Same ranking for the 3yr sequence of 2023-25 vs 2000-2002 (65.74" vs 60.95"). |

The calendar day rainfall of 1.58" on the 23rd was my 3rd highest daily September total on record (only the two main flooding days of 2013 were (much) wetter). This also broke my daily record by 1.05". No snow detected yesterday, despite seeing reports of accumulating snow in Larimer County just below 9K elevation (Black Mountain SNOTEL had 0.4" SWE in middle of the day). Rain ended about 24h after it started by 9pm MST, for a storm total of 1.61". Fingers crossed that the fire season was effectively ended by this event. |

Drizzle/light rain commenced afterwards but only accumulated 0.03" by midnight, with the remainder of 0.66" falling mostly between 1-3am. Peak wind gust: 30mph in early afternoon, ahead of the front. Have not seen a snowflake yet, but could still happen later today as cutoff low moves from western Colorado to our east. Before I forget, I climbed Pawnee Pass mid-day yesterday, with graupel showers and easily 40mph wind near the top, along with barely 100' visibility, a fitting overture to the subsequent 24h-36h. Based on a neighbor's visit to the Brainard Lake parking lot on the 23rd, at least 6" of snow fell overnight. |

Weak backwash showers during the morning that appeared to add more snow to the higher elevations west of here (we stayed in the 40sF through about noon MST). Fall colors are starting to become more common now - first leaves turned yellow in mid-to-late August, probably due to our dry summer this year (I have noticed this before, especially during the 2002 drought summer). Despite an above-average number of rainy days so far this month (9 out of 14), the sum total of 0.70" is below normal. The same thing can be said for July (with 18 days amounting only to 1.25"), while June and August were closer to normal for the number of rainy days, but with below-normal rainfall totals as well. |

Pleasant weather all around, including for a long mid-day hike (nice to have a less crunchy forest floor to walk on, too). Monthly statistics for August 2025: 1.93" is 83% of the 1991-2020 normals, but slightly above the median since 2011 (Augusts have been about 1" drier compared to the 90s and 00s). June through August only came in at 4.67", my 4th driest of 36 summers. The current Water Year is now at 17.93" (76% of normal) - we will have our 4th Water Year in a row below normal by the end of September (unless we get a repeat of 2013). The wettest day of the month was on the 30th with 0.33", the only daily record of this summer. FWIW, the highest daily total this summer was 0.50" back in June - lowest on record (by 0.01"). With the late-month wet spell (1.56" in 9 precipitating days between August 21-30) we also cooled off enough to make August about as normal for the average temperature as it gets: 60.06F is 0.1F above the normal of 59.94F. The daily high temperatures ranged from 59F on the 25th and 30th to 85F on the 13th, with no new records set. However, the high of 63F on the 23rd tied that particular daily record on the low end. There were three daily record lows, all on the high end: 57F on the 6th, and 56F on the 7th and 14th. The lowest temperature of 39F on August 31 was not cold enough (by 6F) to set a new record.
P.S.: Almost forgot: the dry spell from August 4th through the 14th with only a trace of rain on the 6th is the only 11day dry spell on record that is completely contained in the month of August (July 22 - August 01 in 2015, and August 23 - September 02 are the two such spells that spilled over into neighboring months). |

Running 12-month: 18.56" (only June 2005-May'06 was a bit drier), or 73% of normal, an improvement of 12% over last month's record. Snow season ended up with 130.8", 2nd lowest on record (35 seasons) - only 2005-6 was less snowy with 114.1". Temperatures were a bit on the cool side, with an average of 43.6F (-1.3F). For Tmax, 36F on the 6th set a new daily record, while 72F on the 12th of the month just a tied record. The Tmin of 44F on the same date set a new daily record, while 41F on the previous day was a tie, and 45F on the 13th missed the record for that date. Perhaps noteworthy that the highest Tmin for May did not even break a daily record, while the same temperature in April 2025 set a new monthly record. The 6th was the wettest and snowiest day of the month, with 1.27" and 6.9" setting the only new daily precipitation/snowfall records, respectively. |

Partials: 0.07/0.8" by 6pm, then a break, and another 0.04/0.4" since midnight. Went skiing in subzero conditions during late afternoon to break trail - flashback to skiing in Wisconsin in the 1980s... |
| 2025-01-18 | 7:40 AM | 0.58 | 9.2 | 0.58 | 14.5 | NA | | Tmax: 32 (both very early and around noon); Tmin: 04 by midnight / -3 right at observing time. Snow began a bit early (before 3pm), but remained light past sunset. Snowfall rates exceeded 1"/h from about 6-11pm. Snow:H2O ratios started out higher than 20:1, but dropped radically to under 10:1 around midnight, as arctic air shut down dendrite production. Here are my partials: 1.7/0.07" (7pm); 2.9/0.16" (9pm); 3.0/0.18" (Midnight); 1.6/0.17" (7:40am). Snow depth actually peaked at midnight with 15" before dropping with the denser snow falling on top of the fluffy layer. Before I forget, early yesterday morning (around 5am) we had wind gusts to 55mph to say goodbye to our "warm air" (at that point just below freezing) - the 24h temperature change until this morning was just about -30F, despite not having a dramatic FroPa. |

Columbine got down to -8F as best as I could tell - the walk from the sauna to the communal bathhouse (1/10 mile) was a good hardiness test... |

We are off to our yearly Columbine trip where are host claims that 13" of fluffy snow have fallen in last 24h. |

| 2025-01-01 | 7:00 AM | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | 9.5 | NA | | Tmax: 20; Tmin: 04 before midnight (coldest of the month, a new record for warmest December Tmin) / 05 since then. A rare cold day to finish the month. Peak gust: 30mph. Monthly statistics: 0.62/9.6" (56/51% of the 1991-2020 normals; tied for 7th and 6th place, respectively, since 1990). A weak daily precipitation record was improved slightly on the 17th: 0.13", but not enough snow for any day to reach a new record. Snow depth varied from 7" to 10", not quite reaching the levels seen in November, but still not too far off the long-term averages for the month. The mean temperature of 29.2F broke the previous record by more than 1F, at 7.1F above normal. This is the 2nd record-warm month in 2024 after October. The only two daily temperature records were set on the 20th and 21st, with 32F and 34F, respectively, for Tmin. The warmest temperature of the month reached 48F on the 3rd and 7th, not high enough for records.
The yearly average of 41.3F is 1.6F warmer than normal, 2nd only to 2012 which was another 0.6F warmer. Annual precipitation reached a measly 21.80", or 3.76" below normal, but still high enough for 9th place in 34 calendar years (the record driest year remains 2002, with 17.54"). Despite the dryness (mostly in growing season), the total snowfall of 192.5" was 6" higher than the annual mean, thanks to March (65.4") and November (35.3"), both ranked 4th highest on record. |
