| 2026-01-02 | 7:00 AM | 0.02 | T | T | T | NA | | Tmax: 43; Tmin: 33 both before and after midnight, thus dodging another daily record. However, we had our first ever "rainy" day in January, as the rain-snow mix never fully converted and melted off the snowboard as it fell. |
| 2026-01-01 | 7:00 AM | 0.00 | 0.0 | 0.00 | T | NA | | Tmax: 46 (yet another daily record, by 3F); Tmin: 38 (colder later today). Here are the statistics for the month of December 2025: 1.00/15.5" (90%/83% of the 1991-2020 normals). More than half of that fell on the 3rd of December (0.58/9.9", not enough for the daily records). The seasonal snowfall has reached 21.4", my 2nd lowest on record. Snow depth peaked at 8" on the 4th and dropped all the way to a trace from the 22nd to the 27th (and again on the evening of the 31st). If memory serves, this is only the 2nd time on record with a just a trace of snow on the ground around Xmas (1994 was the previous depressing case like that). The real grim statistics deal with our temperatures: December ended up above freezing: 32.5F which is 10.5F above normal, by far the biggest warm anomaly of any month on record (June 1990 onwards). The previous record for the biggest warm anomaly was November 1999, with +8.0F. The previous record for December was just last year with 29.2F (3.3F colder than this year). There were eight new daily Tmax records (plus three tied records) as well as TEN new daily Tmin records (also plus three tied records), both by far the most of any month since my observations started more than 35 years ago. All of these records were on the warm side, of course. The warmest values were reached right before Christmas, with 56F for Tmax on the 23rd and 40F for Tmin on the 22nd. Both of these values are 2nd only to the early December heat wave of 2021 that produced the December records of 59 and 42F, respectively. After the second warmest November on record, we are definitely not on track for a "good" winter season. Here is hoping that January turns things around. Almost forgot to mention that the neighborhood wunderground station reported 48mph yesterday, a fitting end to a month with 24 such days (above 40mph), and a record-tieing total of five days with 70mph, and a record gust of 89mph on the 19th of the month. |
